Interacting with finance & numbers

it's been a week full of driving ... plenty of time to mull things over. b'tween got me thinking that there are two key elements of MyCake that I want to find the time, space (and cash) to work on:
- community ... how we set up a trusted community that users will share, ask questions with etc
- interaction design ... how to design good interactions with numbers

Community:
to date the typical stance on numbers is that they are not to be shared and indeed are to be protected. whilst i agree that confidentiality and security are crucial to establishing a trusted site the goal as I see it is to establish an atmosphere where users choose to share their insight, questions and challenges with other users. this may lead to mentoring, shared resources .. who knows.

Interaction design:
we've already seen that the benchmarking reporting we've designed is far preferable to the typical tables and lists of numbers.
this visualisation of finances is a key part of our usp and one that needs developing throughout the site. it could be a dashboard on the landing page with drag and drop widgets. it could be colour coding of thermometers ... the key is to find a way to research what visualisation tools work in this environment.

it's 3am, Shelagh Wright and I delivered the 'Investment Matters' conference for CIDA & ECCE yesterday, my brain's still spinning and rather than attribute it to the superb conversations i'm going to blame the expresso martini's for my insomnia.
in tribute to this drink more elegant than the vodka/redbull and better disguised than many forms of sleep deprivation torture here's my list of best places in town to mess with your zzzzz's

World Investment Conference here I come

Well here's the thing. I'm navigating a microlight aircraft to Switzerland and the route takes us back through La Baule (we were planning on having an extra day in Nantes to travel by articulated elephant around the city). So when Anamaria Wills said she was speaking at the WIC I plucked up the courage to ask if they were looking for Creative Industries speakers as I'd be keen to speak given the opportunity.
I'll be speaking on the 5th at the 4-6.30pm session and overall it's a great programme. Watch this space for feedback.

Market Day goes into production

Arts funding & the Diamond market ... an analogy to shed light on the current position

The current state of arts funding is rather like the diamond market before de Beers lost their monopoly on supply. If Arts Council England is the equivalent of de Beers then HE institutions are the diamond mine owners. There are key lessons and key differences of course.

Key Lessons:
- we cannot continue to control supply in a rapidly growing market [especially when the supply grows yet faster than the market]
- primary producers benefit from a highly fluid yet immobile workforce as this maintains stability whilst minimising the labour costs.
- there is a huge power imbalance between the HE institutions and the labour force. In the creative and cultural sector this means that HE institutions obtain benefit from cheap, regularly renewed, highly competitive labour markets. The associate lecturers receive very little benefit from the current structure of these labour markets ... this keeps this labour force below the poverty line in many cases
- this position is compounded by the cap on daily rates imposed in the grant system by ACE because they have been historically unwilling to engage with the economic and policy challenges that come with the reviewing their position
- the workforce are immobile because they don't have sufficient transferable skills or resources to move into sectors which deliver higher incomes

Key differences:
- the diamond market seeks to push up prices rather than reduce cost as the mechanism of increasing/maintaining profitability i.e. it works with demand economics not supply economics
- the diamond mine workers are less mobile than those in the creative industries. a
As the creative workforce realises that there are options beyond teaching and grant funding they will diversify their income portfolio. to do this they require either a) entrepreneurship skills and/or b) to acquire skills needed to get a job in a creative sector or any other. The process of development of skills to increase employability does not operate very well in the creative industries
- the elasticity of demand is well mapped out in the diamond market but is not in the Creative Industries ... I suggest that the elasticity is greater than the subsidy system thinks it is.

Arboreal vs. Rhizomic

The seekers (the accretive innovations of experience) and the finders (conceptualists & the success of youth) that David Galenson speaks of as the different types of innovators want different things fortunately. Finders such as Martin Creed get the benefit of the winning but also the hiatus and the self-questioning don’t support the activity of the finder as they encourage people to do more of the same. Seekers such as Gillian Carnegie and Cornelia Parker have the benefit of the nomination but not the winning as it supports the way they work.
This hierarchical view of winners, rankings and scale gets stuck in that it works against the flexibility, responsiveness and freedom to follow your nose which is important in the support of intuition in innovation. In this sense the rhizomic approach with the agglomeration effect has a significant role to play.
So lets stop this chest beating boys and get down out of the trees. When you start walking on two legs and wear a skirt you’ll find that a pair of heels gives you something more important than blisters.
It is this rhizomic collaborative approach which will be important in the internationalisation of the SME’s in the creative & knowledge industries worldwide in the 21st century not the scale driven arboreal approach of the 19th century manufacturing economies.

So we do need to balance the prizes and the youth awards with policies that support the accretive and experience based breakthroughs but we need to support them in ways other than hierarchical rankings and prize structures ... we need to support them through clusters, collaboration and synergistic connections to breadth of ideas.

C'mon, time to sort out your carbon offsets

not so much of a new year's resolution as time to spare over the Christmas holidays.

I've offset the odd plane flight and train ticket in the latter parts of 2007 so I thought I'd buy some offsets for my car, bus, train travel as well as my home.

easy peasy at www.co2balance.co.uk ... just make best guesses on your usage levels and choose your favourite project to fund.

I reckoned 12,000 miles in the car, 200 by bus, and 1,000 by train plus about £1k on fuel bills just to be on the safe side. A princely sum of £105 and I've chosen to use it to contribute to renewable forrests in Cornwall. Of course this is in addition to buying green electricity and gas but here's a case where I'm happy to double pay.

Market Day....a sell out

Just back from a week in Scotland delivering Market Day workshops for Starter for Six. Dundee, Inverness, Glasgow & Edinburgh...hard work but well worth it.

All the prototypes that Harrington & Squires slaved over went down a treat 'you have the best stuff' being my favourite comment from a product designer.

We'll be tweaking the kits in the next few weeks ready to train-the-trainer later in the year. Anyone who's interested in using these training tools should drop me a line....

The prototype objects for Market Day will be tested during Starter 4 Six in Scotland next week. Harrington & Squires are working flat out printing, cutting & assembling most of the bits.

Meanwhile I'm working on the participant handbooks. I'm using Proboscis' eBook format and their eBook generator.

We will improve these so that they utilise the Market Day branding and include references to the other objects but for now they will do fine.

Viewing Platform with CSM students

Thank's to Artquest's introduction Viewing Platform has been trialled with Central St. Martin's students as part of their year two professional practice course. Couple of great comments... 'this is the most teaching we've had at college'...being my all time favourite. Discussions are afoot as to how this could become an ongoing part of the professional practice curriculum (great) and Sarah & Judith were both confident that they could deliver a Viewing Platform workshop...that meets the goal of these toolkits working without me.

I trialled these with Creative Academy in Slough last week....great response, the SME's I was working with much preferred them to a powerpoint presentation of this sort of information PLUS it got them thinking as to what they can do with storycubes themselves.

Productising my Marketing Workshop

A few years ago I devised a workshop to teach the basics of marketing to Creative Industries firms. As a member of the Chartered Institute of Marketing I've been on the receiving end of plenty such training and was keen to translate marketing language and teaching into a format that would resonate more easilywith creatives.

Now, with the financial support of NESTA I'm productising this workshop. There are a couple of long term goals here... to be able to train other trainers in my methods so that I'm no longer the bottleneck and, more importantly in the short term, to create a really strong set of visual mnemonics to help participants remember the key learnings from the workshop.

Above is one of the tools I'm toying with ... the storycube format was devised by Proboscis (www.proboscis.org.uk) and I'm testing its application in a new setting.

eulogy to the sea

Here I stand in the epicentre of my world, marvelling at so distant an uninterrupted straight line bisecting sea and sky.

As I sit still I am moved through a rhythm of the swell and on past each variation in this theme of blue. A seascape of such apparent substance as to be suited to walking out upon, yet my being is contained within this machine for living in, boundaried and protected by a fibre-glass shell. I go to sea not to escape the parallel realities that each individual crosses each urban day but to envelop my conscious mind in a single reality and thence to free my subconscious.

In this way the geography of the route is vital in the moment but irrelevant to the journey. It is the being at sea that matters. Time and direction take on new meanings in the sleep-deprived rhythm of the watches as we zig-zag our way out to a point marked only in the mathematics of a chart. A boat is not a car, a sea is not a road, there is no direct route here…only angles enabling Velocity Made Good. Nor does complexity end here, moment by moment changes of the angles of wind on the ears of trimmers and helmsmen changing expectations of speed, direction, sail set and weight on rudder.

As I sit still I am moving to the balance of the boat and her reaction to the sea states and wind patterns. Here I am in extra time, a gift of living slowly through a world conflated by ease of communication and increased speed of travel. In this sea surrounded world conversation becomes an alternative to quiet rather than the focus of companionship. And, in the hours or days between tacks, time expands and is filled by the meditative demands of a well-trimmed sail.

On a fair day land gives good warning of approaching arrival. Sizing him up as we run parallel to the coast, petulant and defiant yet ready to concede a certain relief of a safe mooring…relief that oft takes the form of alcoholic stupor as crew put aside hoses and sail bags for a harbour view and a beer.

Breakfast Bonanza

2007 is the start of a new era - gym membership for the first time in a decad coupled with a personal trainer who is helping me make drastic changes to the way I eat. Not so much a diet but a different emphasis. Most notably breakfast is changing from muesli with fruit (I seem to have eaten that all my life and am quite happy with the repetitive nature of it) to a cooked & larger breakfast.

It has required more than a little inventiveness but here are a few of the successes:

- porridge - a new thing for me (i recall lumpy and flavourless of a childhood) but many variations on a theme, mostly involving added fruit (dried, fresh and cooked) but the real revelation was the morning when I'd run out of milk so made it with water and elderflower cordial.,

- bacon - grilled with sciroppo di amarene (from carluccios) drizzled on top, accompanied by poached eggs and sauteed mushrooms & cherry tomatoes. The balsamic glaze found in waitrose is another variation on this theme. As an alternative to tomato ketchup I recommend crab-apple jelly/jam or redcurrant jelly

- scrambled eggs - i discovered exmouth market farmers market on friday and purchased some italian eggs and chanterelle mushrooms for saturday morning scramble. as i had some parma ham lying about i fried it like bacon, added the chanterelle's and then the eggs. fabulous colours as well as flavours. ditto the use of crab-apple jelly.

What flavour?

With a background in marketing & strategy this forms the core of my knowledge base. I have experience in both starting businesses and growing them and a particular interest in how one relates conceptually to one's business - how personal or separate it is, the model in one's head as to what business looks like etc etc. This means that the areas I work on with clients most commonly include:

Structuring a broad vision into bite sized goals for the short and medium term
Highlighting practicalities that will need to be addressed as they grow and recommending potential solutions – from accounting systems to job descriptions and approaches to hiring staff
Business plan development – detailed for 12 months, broader brush for 3-5 years
Conceptualisation of business models appropriate to the way you wish to operate
Coaching on bridging from Creative work into new sectors i.e. the translation activity that is required to learn to speak and act in different sectors & environments (looking for the difference in use of language & jargon and the different definitions of truth, trust, timeframe, credibility etc)
Implementation advice & sounding board – a business person to put questions to around implementation, routes to market, client management
Marketing strategy, implementation (& where relevant launch planning) – making specific use of my marketing background to help in the development of a launch plan
Undertaking a skills (and if appropriate a board) audit
Networking coach – guiding individuals & teams in how they present themselves in different arenas and in methods for seeking out new opportunities

As I embark upon a new coaching relationship I look out for signs as to the working style of the invidual or team and establish a way of working that both plays to their strengths whilst challenging their development. Here are a few of the things I look out for:

Pro-active vs. co-erced
Meeting the commitments made (vs. rescheduling tasks ad infinitum) – and if that means setting conservative deadlines rather than aggressive ones it is still more productive
New vs. familiar concepts – if a concept is new it takes time to understand and internalise it, if it is familiar (however vaguely) then you’ve already worked out a place for it in your understanding of the world
Constraints from other places (time or resources) and/or alternate foci in your life…and the stability of these elements
Working styles – sequential vs. circular vs. holistic, whether these are conscious and recognised
Clarity of vision of the future – being able to make decisions against an outline of where you want the decision to take you
Prioritisation of ‘business’ elements, particularly in relation to creative activities – if you have identified it as a key route to progressing you’ll treat it differently than if it is ‘must I?’
Whether or not your internal processes are capable of meeting your expansion/growth plans – e.g. accounting systems and whether you’ve moved on from excel sheets to some form of accounting software (with or without the assistance of a part-time book-keeper)
Ability to free up some elements via delegation or sub-contraction and having a ready pool of contacts to use for this

The Bad News and the good

The more I give talks on the subject of being proactive as an artist the more bold I become in delivering the tougher messages. So here are a few of the things I'm now saying more directly:

The News:

there's no-one to do it for you....do it yourself - you can't just offload writing and promoting your work to others, it matters that you do it yourself as you need to learn how to go about this before delegating it when successful enough to pay for it
galleries and curators won't come looking, you have to take it to them - so put on your own shows and invite them. Demonstrate your commitment to being an artist by not just making the work but putting on the show, organising the pv, sending out invites etc etc
sending slides (or cd's) unsolicited is a waste of time and money, they end up in a pile and may well get binned - get to know galleries and curators, find out their interests, chat to them, talk about what they are showing before asking them to look at your work
if you don't put the name of the person you want to reach on the envelope it will go straight to the bin - if you can't be bothered to find out a name (and in doing so demonstrate that you've made some effort) then why would anyone come more than half way to meet a stranger like this?

Launching an art world mapping tool

Throughout the research I've conducted on the way art worlds work there have been a series of scribbled drawings mapping out connections between different elements. It's been a less than scientific process!
I'm keen to devise tools that deliver understanding both in their use and in their results and furthermore that benefit from repeated use by many people.
The art world mapping process is one such tool.
It was launched at Static in Liverpool through the re:format programme of events organised by Dark Horse Projects. I worked with performance artist Rebecca Reid and we focussed on an experimentational approach where the challenges faced in the Liverpool and International arenas played out in the responses to the mapping processes.
In other situations I will use this game-like tool as a show and tell approach or to lead groups through a learning route. This diversity of uses and applicability to a wide range of groups is intended to contribute to my ongoing research into the analysis of art world structures.

Aims of work:

Identifying how business needs and individual motivations, skills and drivers match up.
Providing assistance in developing a plan of action to grow the business.
Providing specific sales & marketing assistance as required

Types of results:

Enabling entrepreneurs to channel their current skill set into their business development plan. Alongside this are decisions about the outsourcing of some areas of work.

The visible results of this process include a change in the way entrepreneurs talk about their business growth – they commonly become more enthusiastic about the areas that previously they glossed over and are usually much better at explaining how their business will develop over the next 1-5 years and the steps they will be taking to make it happen.

Aims of work:

Writing a business plan with an organisation.
Coaching a CEO or senior member of staff through the process of writing a business plan.

Skills transfer to staff involved in developing the business plan.
